Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE) is a registered reputable national non-governmental organization implementing that provides socio-economic empowerment to orphans, vulnerable children and widows in Nigeria. WEWE is currently implementing a comprehensive USAID-funded Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) project called Local Partners Initiative for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria (LOPIN-2) in partnership with local and international organizations as well as different tiers of the Government of Nigeria at national, state, local and levels and seek to expand it program therefore seeks application from qualified persons for the positions of Director Business Development.

Job summary:

As part of its strategic growth, a new role has arisen within the organization for a Director Business Development. The incumbent will help to devise, develop and deliver a comprehensive strategic and tactical plan for business development, income generation and awareness-raising for WEWE. To coordinate these activities, WEWE is looking for a strong influencer and negotiator, who is self-motivated and has a proven track record of business development. H/she should be capable of radical thinking, developing new and innovative proposals that attract funders.

Working Relations:

The Director Business Development will report directly to the Executive Director of WEWE.

The director will work independently, with support from a WEWE staff team.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Research and determines proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs; studying requests for proposal (RFPs); attending strategy meetings.
  2. Work with team to develop proposals that speaks to the funding criteria, concerns, and objectives and are in line with WEWE vision and mission.
  3. Gathers proposal information by identifying sources of information; coordinating submissions and collections; identifying and communicating risks associated with proposals.
  4. Research and determines proposal concept by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs; studying requests for proposal (RFPs); attending strategy meetings.
  5. Work with team to develop proposals that speaks to the funding criteria, concerns, and objectives and are in line with WEWE vision and mission.
  6. Meets proposal deadline by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval; entering and monitoring tracking data; coordinating requirements with contributors; contributing proposal status information to review meetings; transmitting proposals.
  7. Gathers proposal information by identifying sources of information; coordinating submissions and collections; identifying and communicating risks associated with proposals.
  8. Develops proposal by assembling information including project nature, objectives/outcomes/deliverables, implementation, methods, timetable, staffing, budget, standards of performance, and evaluation; writing, revising, and editing drafts including executive summaries, conclusions, and organization credentials.
  9. Register with developmental website such as fundsforngo.org, developmentaid.org and follow up on newly advertised business calls.
  10. Develop a “GO” list of funding opportunities that WEWE should apply for.
  11. Seek out websites that WEWE should register with to aid new business development efforts.
  12. Participate in a one on one in-house 3 day proposal writing and new business development training.
  13. Develop and deliver WEWE new business development strategy appropriate to need and responsive to opportunity, in close collaboration with the Executive Director and board of Trustees which will involve the following:
  • Allocation of funds to news business development;
  • Head-hunting and recruitment of new appropriate expertise for new project;
  • Formatting of CVs of potential candidates for proposals;
  • Identification and holding of meetings with potential identification of international networks that WEWE needs to register with a be a member;
  • Development of systems for forecasting opportunities and setting up ‘go or no go’ criteria. (The term ‘go’ or ‘no go’ is used to describe the process of deciding whether an organisation should go for a new business opportunity);
  • Make ‘go’ or ‘no go’ recommendations;
  • Brokerage of new business opportunities (setting up new business meetings with potential partners, donors, companies and government agencies);
  • Partnership development strategy development i.e. identifying potential international and local, technical partners to act as sub-partners on proposal;
  • Identification of funding opportunities on media platforms and visiting international donors;
  • Forecasting and developing a list of upcoming opportunities that WEWE is eligible to apply for e.g. DFID – Girls Education Initiative;
  • Tracking new business opportunities;
  • Meeting with potential partner organizations to identify and negotiate strategic partnerships;
  • Drafting technical sections of concept notes, proposals and applications for fund; and
  • As needed, determine and collect costing information
  • Be responsible for communicating this strategy to all WEWE staff and board members.
  • Align the strategy with that of the organization and other program, seeking to maximize
  • Effectiveness through collaboration.
  • Research into relationships that should be and manage effective partnerships with both existing and new key corporate partners, NGOs, government, media and funders.
  • Innovate and offer new ideas and approaches for developing WEWE, building relationships with other prospective appropriately business partners and with other networks where appropriate.
  • Stay networked and keep abreast of trends, news, events and deadlines, so that all possible, new or enhanced opportunities are exploited.
  • Ensure work is conducted within the context of the overall governance and management of
  • WEWE, WEWE’s new business strategy and WEWE’s annual plan and long-term strategy.
  1. Present business development training and mentoring to business developers and other internal staff.
  2. Perform any other function as delegated by WEWE-LOPIN 2 Chief of Party (COP).

Qualifications 

  • Relevant degree in business management and administration, economic or any social science discipline. An MBA holder is desirable and Master’s degree (preferred)
  • At least 8 years’ experience working in a business development role in a corporate environment or an NGO, social enterprise or government department.
  • At least 3 years’ corporate marketing and branding experience.
  • At least 4 years’ experience developing, writing and delivering proposals (preferably in the Nigerian context).
  • 4years experience of developing and implementing partnership development activities.
  • Extensive use of project management approaches including setting project plans, budgets and schedules.
  • Experience in fundraising would be preferable.
