RECRUITMENT OF BOARD MEMBER

The Incorporated Trustees of Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization [hereinafter referred to as “Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE)”] is a not-for-profit, Non-Governmental Organization founded in 2004 with its headquarters in Abuja. WEWE has grown significantly from managing an income of $6,000/annum to over $ 2 million US dollars/annum. WEWE currently has five active projects which are the Rivers State ASPIRE project, the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and care project sub granted by the Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria (IHVN), Nigeria Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project by palladium and the USAID State2State project and GlobalGiving supported Widows Health Insurance Project.

WEWE wishes to recruit an additional male board member into its Board of Incorporated Trustees for a renewable 2-year term period in order to ensure Gender balance and WEWE seeks individuals who share the same ideologies to become part of her distinguished Board of Trustees. WEWE is particularly seeking a board member who is a chartered accountant, preferably a fellow with experience in working in one of the top chartered accounting firms and who is based in Abuja.

  • Contribute and be part of a team called to the service of providing succor, empowerment, and direct measurable assistance to widows and orphans in Nigeria.

The roles and responsibilities of WEWE Board Members include:

  • To exercise oversight responsibilities, leadership, and accountability for the decisions, actions, and activities of WEWE.
  • To Discuss and decide the overall strategic direction (vision, mission, and values), strategic goals and objectives, and organizational structures of WEWE.
  • To select, appoint, support, and yearly review the performance of the Executive Director.
  • To participate in the recruitment and termination of the appointment of WEWE staff at the Directorate level.
  • To Review and approve organizational policies, work plans, budgets, staff salaries, and compensation plans.
  • To Review organizational performance and progress, programs, management, finance, and operations, including partnerships and arrangements with institutional associates and partners.
  • To ensure the availability of adequate financial resources.
  • To appoint auditors to audit the financial transactions and financial management practices of the organization annually and submit a report to the Board of Trustees yearly.
  • To represent and project WEWE to enhance its status among its networks and the general public.
  • To ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability.
  • To sue for and defend WEWE in its corporate name in court actions concerning WEWE.
  • To apply to the Corporate Affairs Commission for any alteration in WEWE’s name or objects; and approval of any replacement or appointment of additional trustees.
  • To ensure compliance with statutory obligations including submission of annual returns to the Corporate Affairs Commission, in accordance with the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must possess over 10 working years of experience in leadership positions such as being a head of unit/department/division, Chief of Party, Deputy Chief of Party, and Chief Executive Officer or Top manager.
  • Be a professional i.e. Chartered accountant, auditor, senior lawyer, medical doctor Public Health practitioner, banker, financial expert, child psychologist, registered nurse, or any registered/certified professional in any field.
  • Qualified male professionals are strongly encouraged to apply to ensure Gender balance.
  • Candidates must be persons of integrity and honesty driven by a passion for service.
  • Candidates must possess a Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Federal or State Inland Revenue Service.
  • Candidates must be persons of sound mind and have been adjudged by a court to be of sound mind.
  • Candidates must not have been convicted of an offense involving fraud or dishonesty within the last 5 years.
  • Candidates who are residents of Abuja are at an advantage.
  • Candidates with previous Board experience are at an advantage.

Service on WEWE’s Board is without remuneration or any financial benefit, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties subject to availability of funds. Please note that WEWE does not give a sitting allowance for attending meetings. In addition, WEWE has a conflict-of-Interest policy that precludes family members and relatives of Board members from working with or benefiting from WEWE financially.
