PREVENTION OF MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION (PMTCT) SPECIALIST

The Incorporated Trustees of Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization [hereinafter referred to as “Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE)”] a local not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is seeking applications from qualified candidates to fill in the positions of Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Specialist.

WEWE is currently implementing a US Center for Disease Control (CDC) funded project as a sub-grantee in Rivers State targeting over 140,000 beneficiaries per annum. Children, adolescents, and adult caregivers are the key population for FY24 and we are looking for a God-fearing, talented, gifted, and intelligent Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Specialist.

Position:         Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) Specialist

Location:        The successful candidate will be based in Rivers and Abuja

Job Description:

  • S/he will conduct an Early Infant Diagnosis (EID)
  • S/he will conduct antenatal services to ensure that a positive mother does not infect an unborn child
  • S/he will ensure screening  and testing of pregnant women
  • S/he will ensure that positive pregnant mothers are placed on Antiretroviral drugs
  • S/he will educate women of childbearing age on HIV prevention
  • S/he will follow up with a DBS test for the exposed infant after six weeks postnatal
  • S/he will maintain the PMTCT register
  • S/he will maintain a comprehensive register for all pregnant women in the facility
  • S/he must have a thorough understanding of the structure and functions of the facilities and its functions in support of PEPFAR, other participating agencies, and policies, guidelines, and procedures for administration
  • S/he must have a detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the Nigeria public health operational environment, including knowledge of the structure and operations of the MOH and Nigeria government ministries and offices, the environment for health care delivery at the national, regional, district, and community level; must stay current on the work and current projects of other collaborating and donor agencies with PMTCT and related programs.
  • S/he will educate pregnant women on the Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV, and HIV/AIDS health care;  the incumbent must have in-depth specialist knowledge of public health programs, strategies, methods, processes, and techniques used to develop, implement, and evaluate results of PMTCT programs.
  • S/he must work with partners in setting criteria for site selection for specific interventions, budget considerations, and cost analysis including cost-benefit ratio, etc.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A medical Doctor with a Degree in Medicine or a B.Sc Degree in Nursing / Higher Diploma in Nursing / Clinical Medicine with 3 years of continuous HIV program implementation, or a diploma in nursing/clinical medicine with 5 years of continuous HIV program implementation.
  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent in Public Health, Epidemiology, Clinical Psychology, Nursing, and/or Midwifery, an MPH, MBBS, Medical, or other relevant master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Significant and up-to-date knowledge of the current ART, PMTCT, TB/HIV, HTC guidelines, standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Experience in HIV/AIDS care and treatment program implementation with demonstrated expertise in initiating care and treatment services in a public, faith, or private health facility.
  • Must have at least 2-3yrs working experience within both clinical and community settings (of which a minimum of 2 years in an HIV community-based program
  • Minimum of five (5) years of mid-to-senior level public health experience in the Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV and/or other HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment programs, including program planning, implementation, and evaluation that involve coordination with an international agency or implementing partner is required.
  • This experience must include PMTCT experience that demonstrates the ability to consult and collaborate effectively with different levels of the healthcare field  
  • This requires specialized knowledge of the subject.
  • Good working knowledge of team management techniques to plan, organize, and direct multi-disciplinary project teams and activities and overall administrative requirements.
  • Good working knowledge of epidemiology, statistics, and data analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including professional-level English language skills, presentation, and reporting skills.
  • Proven analytical, report writing, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of PEPFAR Program reporting requirements including familiarity with the data collection and reporting tools.
  • Proficiency in working with ICT systems, MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. R will be an added advantage
